Unashe Mutangara (3 months)
My husband and I had our consultation some months ago, when our little boy was about 2-3 months. At first I was sceptical, (Keith is quite the disciplinarian, so he was sold from the get go). We disagreed about the effectiveness of the method weeks into the implementation when Unashe didn't seem to adjust. He would cry his lungs out after we'd tucked him in for a nap, while we got accusing stares from guests and family. Although they liked the benefits, they were critical of the method.
In spite of knowing the perks of this process in theory, we couldn't help questioning if everyone was right, if we weren't indeed emotionally neglecting our kid. After all, we were first time parents. People we trusted and depended on for advice disagreed with us. But today, those are the same people who are grateful for our son's cool and easy going temperament. We are able to leave him with family for a week and, provided they stick to the program, they are surprised to hardly ever see him cry. He is just over a year old now, full of smiles and laughter. On days that his program is interrupted, he is the complete opposite of calm. I have come to realise that there's no such thing as a difficult child, instead, a poorly rested child. Of course this theory will be tested with our number 2 :)
There are two schools of thought when it comes to parenting: the one believes in child-centric homes, where at times you can feel like pulling your hair out because of an over-stimulated, under-rested baby, but that's tolerated because life is about rearranging everything to suit the new entrant. The second school of thought believes in training the child to fit into the environment in which it is brought, teaching him/her survival skills to best adapt and thrive. I believe Baby Love falls in the latter category, which is the school that teaches delayed gratification.
Thank you Jacqui, for the excellent service and program.
